Title: The Object of Depression

The increased frequency of the diagnosis of depression stemming from changes in diagnostic criteria and encouraged by the availability today of anti-depressants is not merely a symptom of contemporary culture. It is also a manifestation of a certain modern position of the subject. Recalling Lacan’s remark that the objet a is already present in Freud’s ‘Mourning and Melancholia,’ we will see how this concept can help us address this phenomenen.
