In Conversation: Psychoanalysis and the Arts

Anatol: obsessive player or playful obsessional?
in Schnitzler's 'The Amourous Adventures of Anatol'

Characters:

Mavis Himes, psychoanalyst
Morris Panych, playwright and director
Mike Shara, actor playing Anatol
Erin Brubacher, facilitator

Presentation:
Freud, a contemporary and friend of Schnitzler, struggled with what he called "the dark continent" of women, posing the oft-repeated question "what does the woman want?" In this piece, we see Anatol, a young playboy, describing to his close friend his multiple encounters with women. In spite of himself and all these different women, a persistent dissatisfaction remains, leading him repeatedly on to the next adventure. Perhaps, we can rephrase Freud's question and ask, "What does Anatol want?" and "What motivates his behaviour?"

In this conversation, we will explore the questions of male desire, the art of seduction and the obsessional.
