Colloquium: Dr. Sheila Cavanagh, Dr. Patricia Elliot, Dr. Patricia Gherovici, Dr. Mavis Himes

Dr. Sheila Cavanagh: Associate Professor, Sociology and Sexuality Studies Program Coordinator, York University (Toronto): Queer. Jouissance: Gender and Sexuality in Lacanian Psychoanalysis.

Dr. Patricia Elliot, Associate Professor, Sociology and MA in Cultural Analysis and Social Theory, Wilfrid Laurier University  (Waterloo): Beyond scientific certainty: Psychoanalysis, complexity and (trans)sexual identity.

Dr. Patricia Gherovici: Psychoanalyst, Philadelphia Lacan Study Group (Philadelphia): Neither Sex Nor Gender: The Conundrum of Sexual Difference.

Dr. Mavis Himes: Psychoanalyst, Speaking of Lacan (Toronto): Sexuation: Encounters with Sexuality.

This one-day symposium is designed to promote a dialogue between psychoanalysis, queer theory, and trans studies by exploring the points of convergence and difference between analytic and intellectual positions on sex and gender. There will be a focus on questions such as: What did Lacan mean by his statement “there is no sexual relation?” What is phallic jouissance and how does it differ from jouissance of the Other? How can we better formulate the question “what does it mean to be a man or a woman?” What do queer theories and trans studies have to contribute to our understanding of sex and gender?

There will be an initial introduction to Jacques Lacan’s elaboration of sexuation. Subsequent presentations will engage Lacan’s conception of sexuation to theorize trans subjectivity, sex and gender identity. Following each presentation there will be an opportunity for the audience to actively engage with the presenters. It is hoped that we will be able to consider more broadly what psychoanalytic inquiry offers to thought about contemporary sex and gender systems.

This symposium is open to all those interested in learning more about Jacques Lacan’s elaborations on sexuation, queer theory, and trans studies.
